A study of Australian adults explored links between negative déjà vu, wellbeing, personality, and spirituality. Findings showed lower psychological wellbeing was tied to negative déjà vu. Openness had no impact, while strong theistic beliefs worsened outcomes, possibly due to existential tension. The study recommends therapy account for spiritual differences when addressing such experiences. Apparitions are often seen as hallucinations, but this study compared real and imagined ghost reports. With no major differences found, results suggest cultural influences shape these experiences. Apparitions were typically human-like, semi-transparent, in white, and appeared in bedrooms during winter weekdays. Dr Patrick Jones (Honorary Research Associate, Perth WA) Whilst with the emergence of the science of heroism there now exists data on our everyday hero, one can expand this inquiry and ask what could be the causes and conditions of a superhero. To address this, an examination is conducted of the origins of mindfulness, Buddhist psychology and the assertion that its practitioners can develop supernormal capabilities as a result of attaining certain stages in the path to enlightenment. Examining first their foundational eight “jhana” states (levels of attention) and the six consequent “abhinnas” (siddhis or special abilities) that arise from such mental mastery, evidence that mindfulness practices can unfold the supernormal potential of its practitioners is explored. What emerged was empirical literature suggesting some practitioners exhibit indicators of enhanced functioning including elevated physical health and resistance to disease, increased immunity to aging and improved cognitive processing, greater resilience and fearlessness, more self-less and pro-social behaviours, control over normally autonomic responses, and increased paranormal functionality. These improvements in human functioning provide evidence that in the quest for enlightenment, there are practices that unintentionally open out these abilities, and as such we might want to consider adopting these methods to expand what is possible for any ordinary human being.
